Two centres, no train line, plenty of short trips
Ask anyone in Maroubra where they live and the answer is usually "up near the Junction" or "down at the beach". Maroubra Junction sits around the corner of Anzac Parade and Maroubra Road, with Pacific Square, the banks and The Juniors club. The beach end is east along Maroubra Road, where Marine Parade runs behind the sand past the surf club and the Seals.
Neither end has a station. The nearest rail is the L3 light rail, which finishes at Juniors Kingsford, north of the Junction on Anzac Parade. Everything else is buses. With suitcases, a pram or a 5am flight, people ring for a car.
We pick up from the apartment blocks along Marine Parade, the houses around Heffron Park, South Maroubra near Arthur Byrne Reserve and the shops at the Junction. Sedans and SUVs take up to four passengers. A maxi taxi seats up to 11 for a team heading to a carnival or a family flying out together, and a child seat goes in if you ask when booking.

20 to 25 minWestfield, the bus interchange and the train into town. We usually head up through Randwick rather than along the coast road.

Maroubra's coastline
Walk the headlands one way, ride home the other
Maroubra Beach was declared a National Surfing Reserve in 2006, but plenty of locals come for the walking. Randwick Council's coastal walkway runs about 2.4 km from Mistral Point at the northern end, past Mahon Pool, down along the beach and on to South Maroubra.
From Arthur Byrne Reserve, the Western Escarpment track climbs across Malabar Headland National Park to Malabar Beach, roughly a kilometre one way. The Boora Point track nearby closes when the rifle range is in use, so check before you set out.
There is still no continuous clifftop path from South Coogee, so walkers coming south detour onto Malabar Road.

Maroubra to Sydney Airport
Close to Mascot, which is easy to underestimate
Off-peak, a taxi from Maroubra to the terminals takes 20 to 30 minutes. Because the airport is so near, people cut it fine. On weekday mornings the roads around Mascot and the airport approaches clog, and a 25 minute trip can stretch well past that.
