The Lower North Shore packs a lot into a small area: a second business district at North Sydney, a major teaching hospital at St Leonards, the zoo and beaches of Mosman, and a busy shopping and transport hub at Chatswood. Streets are narrow, parking is scarce and a short trip can mean a long wait at the lights on Military Road.

Many harbourside apartment blocks in Kirribilli, McMahons Point and Neutral Bay have tight driveways, lane access or more than one lobby. Add the entrance to Special Instructions and your driver will pull up in the right place.

Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel
Both connect North Sydney with the city, and tolls apply on southbound crossings. The Tunnel can close overnight for maintenance, sending traffic over the Bridge.
Warringah Freeway
The wide approach through Cammeray and North Sydney, where your lane decides whether you end up on the Bridge, in the Tunnel or heading off another way. Drivers who know it do not get caught out.
Military Road
The main road through Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman towards the Spit. Clearways, bus lanes and a set of lights at almost every corner keep it slow at peak times, so for Balmoral the quieter back streets can be quicker.
Pacific Highway
Runs from North Sydney through Crows Nest, St Leonards and Artarmon to Chatswood, past Royal North Shore Hospital. From Lane Cove, Epping Road and the Lane Cove Tunnel are usually the quicker way into town.

New Year's Eve and event closures
When the harbour puts on a show, the Lower North Shore foreshore fills up. On New Year's Eve, streets around Kirribilli, Milsons Point, McMahons Point and Blues Point Reserve are closed or restricted, and the Harbour Bridge closes to traffic for a period around midnight.
Book your ride home early and agree a pickup point outside the closed area, even if it means a short walk. Our special events page has more tips for big nights out.
