Cruise Terminal Transfers in Sydney, Planned Around Sailing Day

Big suitcases, a set check-in window and a terminal in the busiest part of the city. We get you and your luggage to the Overseas Passenger Terminal or White Bay on time, then bring you home or to the airport when the ship comes back in.

Know your terminal

Two cruise terminals, and two very different drives

Sydney has two cruise terminals, and they are not next door to each other. The Overseas Passenger Terminal sits on the western side of Circular Quay in The Rocks. White Bay Cruise Terminal is out past the Anzac Bridge in Rozelle. Head for the wrong one and you can lose half an hour in city traffic on the one morning you cannot spare it.

When you book a cruise terminal transfer with us, we ask for your ship and terminal, plan the route for the time of day and send a vehicle with room for cruise-sized luggage. We pick up anywhere in Sydney, from a hotel near Darling Harbour or the CBD, or straight from the arrivals kerb with one of our Sydney Airport transfers if you are flying in to board.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

The terminal from the postcards, with the ship tied up between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, right beside the Museum of Contemporary Art. The biggest ships that visit Sydney berth here, because they are too tall to fit under the bridge.

The Rocks is a small grid of narrow streets, and on sailing days it fills with coaches, hotel cars and people on foot. Weekends add The Rocks Markets crowds along George Street. We build that into the pickup time and follow the signed drop-off arrangements on the day.

  • A short run from the CBD and the eastern suburbs, or straight across the bridge from the North Shore
  • Close to hotels at The Rocks, Circular Quay and Barangaroo

White Bay Cruise Terminal

A purpose-built terminal on White Bay, between Balmain and Glebe Island. Ships sailing from here have to pass under the Harbour Bridge on the way out, so only vessels small enough to fit beneath it can berth here.

It sits outside the CBD grid, which makes the approach simpler than The Rocks. There is no train station on the doorstep, though, so most passengers arrive by car, taxi or coach. From the city we usually cross the Anzac Bridge. From the airport, the WestConnex tunnels can save time depending on traffic.

  • A straightforward run from the Inner West, Parramatta and the Northern Suburbs
  • Any tolls on the route you take are shown on your receipt

Flying in to board, or flying home after

Sydney Airport to the ship

Plenty of passengers fly in on the morning of departure. It can work, but a late flight leaves very little slack. Give us your flight number and we track the landing, then drive you from T1 International or the T2 and T3 domestic terminals straight to the right cruise terminal.

Many cruise lines suggest arriving the day before. If you do, we can take you to your hotel on arrival and collect you for the ship the next morning.

The ship to Sydney Airport

Ships tend to arrive early, but getting a few thousand people and their bags ashore takes time, and voyages from overseas include border clearance. Tell us the disembarkation time your cruise line has given you, plus your flight time, and we set a pickup with a sensible buffer.

Running behind? Call us from the terminal. It is far easier to move a pickup than to find a car on the kerb when two ships are unloading.

Sailing day

Embarkation day, step by step

What a cruise terminal transfer looks like from the night before to the moment you walk up the gangway.

  1. Step 1

    The day before

Check your cruise documents for the terminal and your check-in time. Put the cruise line luggage tags on at home, not in the back of the car.

  2. Step 2

    We set the pickup

We work backwards from your check-in time, allowing for the traffic we expect on the Harbour Bridge, the Eastern Distributor or Victoria Road.

  3. Step 3

    On the way

Your driver loads the bags. Keep passports, tickets, medication and valuables in your hand luggage, not the boot.

  4. Step 4

    At the kerb

We pull into the drop-off area and unload. Tagged suitcases go to the terminal baggage drop and you head inside.

  5. Step 5

    Check-in and board

Documents and security screening inside the terminal. If you booked a return, your pickup for the day you dock is already in our diary.

Luggage and vehicle size guide

Cruise luggage needs more room

People pack for formal nights, shore days and a week or two of sunshine, and the bags coming home are rarely lighter. A sedan that is fine for an airport run can be a squeeze on sailing day.

Tell us how many large cases, carry-ons and awkward items like a folded pram or golf clubs you have, and we will match the vehicle. Travelling as a big group? Our maxi cabs take up to 11 passengers. See the full fleet for details.

VehiclePassengersLuggageSuits
Sedan1 to 41 to 3 bagsA couple on a short cruise with a large case each
SUV1 to 41 to 6 bagsCouples or small families on a longer voyage
Kia Carnival1 to 71 to 9 bagsFamilies, or two couples sailing together
Toyota Hiace maxi1 to 111 to 15 bagsExtended families and groups of friends

Luggage figures assume standard suitcases. If you are close to the limit, book the next size up.

Before you book: check which terminal your ship uses

Your terminal is printed on your cruise documents and usually shows in the cruise line app. Port Authority of New South Wales also publishes ship schedules for both terminals on its website. Berths can occasionally change, so look again a day or two before sailing and let us know if yours has moved.

Cruise transfer questions

Check your cruise documents or the cruise line app. Ships too tall to pass under the Harbour Bridge have to use the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. Smaller ships may use either that terminal or White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle. Tell us the ship name when you book and we will confirm the terminal with you.
