Getting around

A town centre built around the train line

Fairfield grew up around its station, which opened in 1856, and the shopping streets still sit tight against the tracks. The Crescent runs beside the line with its old Federation and Art Deco shopfronts. Ware Street and Smart Street carry most of the shops and cafes, and Fairfield Forum fills the block on Station Street. Over the line, Dale Street and Anzac Avenue are much quieter.

Getting in and out means The Horsley Drive or Hamilton Road, and The Horsley Drive in particular carries heavy traffic. For anyone without a car, a taxi is often simpler than two buses from Fairfield Interchange. Typical local trips are a clinic visit out in Prairiewood, or a family coming home from the Saturday markets at Fairfield Showground with bags of produce.

Around Ware Street you will hear Assyrian and Arabic as much as English, and the Iraqi and Assyrian jewellers and restaurants draw visitors from well beyond Fairfield. Plenty of them go home with more than they arrived with. Tell us about the shopping, the pram or the extra passengers when you call, and we will send a big enough car. Sedans handle four, a maxi taxi handles a family outing, and a baby seat is fitted when you ask for one.

Pickup points

Where we pick up in Fairfield

Some of the centre is paved plaza and some is one-way traffic. These notes help your driver get to you on the first pass.

The Crescent and Fairfield station

The station entrance and Crescent Park are both here. It is the simplest meeting point for anyone arriving by train. If you are on the Dale Street side, tell us, because it is a longer drive around than the footbridge suggests.

Fairfield Hospital, Prairiewood

On the corner of Polding Street and Prairie Vale Road. Let us know if you are going to emergency, the maternity unit or an outpatient clinic and we will drop you at the closest door.

Fairfield Forum, Station Street

Kmart, Coles and Aldi, with a big car park at the corner of Station and Cunningham Streets. Wait by the car park entrance with your trolley and we can load straight from there.

Fairfield RSL, Anzac Avenue

On the quieter side of the station. Members heading home late can book a return pickup for a set time when they arrive.

Fairfield Showground markets

On Smithfield Road in Prairiewood. The Saturday markets run behind the grandstands. Agree a spot in the car park so you are not hunting for us between the stalls.

Saturday nights in Fairfield

Wedding season keeps us busy

Weekend nights here belong to wedding receptions, and some of the best known venues, Crystal Room Paradiso among them, are on Smart Street. Big families, relatives flown in from overseas, and a party that can run well past midnight. It is the kind of night where nobody should be driving, and where getting 30 guests home is a job in itself.

A plan that works well is a couple of maxi cabs booked ahead: one run to the hall before the bridal party arrives, then pickups at a set time at the end of the night. Guests staying in hotels in Parramatta or near the airport get their own cars. If the speeches run long, call and we move the pickup.

  • Maxi cabs for 7 or 11 in formal wear
  • Pickups timed to the end of the reception
  • Grandparents taken home first, if you ask

Fairfield to Sydney Airport

Give the M5 the respect it deserves

Off-peak, the drive to the Mascot terminals takes 35 to 50 minutes. Fairfield has no motorway on its doorstep, so the first part of the trip is always suburban roads before we join the M5.

For a long-haul flight with a family's worth of suitcases, leave around three and a half hours before departure. That is maxi cab territory. Add your flight number on the way back and we will time the pickup to your landing. See our airport transfer page for more.

Flying from Badgerys Creek instead?

Western Sydney International is closer to Fairfield than Mascot is, out along Elizabeth Drive and the M12. Allow around 30 to 40 minutes.

It has no overnight curfew, so expect some very early departures. Book those the night before and we will be there.
