Sydney Airport Pickup: How It Works at T1, T2 and T3

Traveller wheeling a suitcase through a quiet airport arrivals hall early in the morning

At Sydney Airport, a pre-booked car does not stand in the taxi rank line. Your driver waits in the terminal's priority pickup area and meets you once you send a message to say you have your bags, whether you land at T1 International or at T2 or T3 Domestic. Because every pickup here runs on a booking rather than a walk-up wait, book as early as you can.

This guide covers how arrivals actually work at each terminal, how a pre-booked pickup differs from the taxi rank and the rideshare zone, and what to do in the gap between landing and getting in the car.

T1 International vs T2 and T3 Domestic

Sydney Airport runs two separate precincts a few kilometres apart, on opposite sides of the runways, so it matters which terminal your flight actually uses.

T1 International

Every international arrival comes through T1. After you land, passport control comes before the baggage carousel, then biosecurity and customs checks come after it. T1 has its own sheltered taxi rank, and a separate priority pickup area used by rideshare and pre-booked vehicles. The arrivals hall here is larger than at the domestic terminals, so allow a little longer to walk from baggage claim out to the kerb.

T2 and T3 Domestic

T2 (Virgin Australia, Jetstar and regional carriers) and T3 (Qantas domestic) sit close together on the opposite side of the airport from T1. Each terminal has its own taxi rank directly outside arrivals, and a shared priority pickup zone a short walk between the two buildings. If you are connecting from an international flight onto a domestic one, or vice versa, build in time to move between precincts. T1 and the T2/T3 precinct are not within walking distance of each other.

Taxi rank, rideshare zone or a pre-booked pickup

All three options exist at every terminal, and they are not the same queue.

  • Taxi rank. A walk-up line for whichever cab is next. Supervised at busy times, but the wait depends entirely on how many flights have just landed.
  • Rideshare pickup zone. A separate area, sometimes a short walk from the terminal, used by ride-hailing apps rather than taxis.
  • Pre-booked pickup. When you book ahead with us, a driver is assigned to your trip before you fly and waits in the terminal's priority pickup area. Terminal layouts and signage can change, so we confirm your exact meeting point by message once you tell us you have your bags, rather than send you looking for a fixed spot from memory.

For the full detail on how a pre-booked pickup runs from touchdown to your front door, see our Sydney Airport priority pickup page. Flying out rather than in? Our Sydney Airport transfers page covers departures from your home or hotel as well as arrivals.

What to do after you land

  • Collect your bags first. Do not message us until you are through the carousel, and through border checks if you have flown internationally. We wait for your update rather than start a clock the moment the plane touches down.
  • Switch your phone back on at the gate. We track your flight, so a delay or an early landing is already accounted for before you reach arrivals.
  • Send a quick message once you are heading for the doors. We reply with exactly where to meet your driver for your terminal.
  • Look for your driver at the meeting point. They help load the bags and confirm the destination before you set off.

Flights delayed or landing early

Add your flight number when you book, whether online or by phone. A late landing does not mean waiting for a car that has given up on you, and an early one does not leave you standing around either. Because the pickup is planned around your actual landing time rather than the time printed on your ticket, changes on the day are handled before you notice them.

Groups, luggage and baby seats

A sedan suits up to four passengers with standard luggage. If you are travelling as a bigger group, with prams and sports gear, or need a child seat fitted before the car arrives, tell us when you book rather than at the kerb.

  • Larger groups and extra luggage: our maxi taxi service covers 7 and 11 seat vehicles.
  • Capsules, child seats and boosters: request one through our taxi with baby seat page and we fit it before we arrive.
  • Travelling with a wheelchair user: see our wheelchair accessible taxi page to book the right vehicle ahead of time.

Common questions

Where exactly will my driver meet me at T1?

In the priority pickup area for T1 International. Because the precise spot can shift with terminal works or signage changes, we confirm it by message once you tell us you have your bags, so you are not relying on directions that may be out of date.

Is the pickup area the same as the taxi rank?

No. The taxi rank is a walk-up queue for whichever taxi is next. Pre-booked cars and rideshare use a separate priority pickup area, so you are not competing with the rank line for a car that has already been assigned to you.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Give us your flight number at booking and we track the actual landing time. Your pickup moves with the flight, so a delay on the tarmac does not leave you without a car.

Do you pick up from both T2 and T3?

Yes. We pick up at T1 International and at both T2 and T3 Domestic. Since the two domestic terminals are close together but the priority pickup point can differ, we confirm the meeting point by message on the day.

Can I book a pickup for someone else, like a visiting parent?

Yes. Book with their flight number and add their name and mobile number in Special Instructions on the booking form, so we can reach them directly if needed.
